Building resilience through Dance Movement Therapy.
Hi there! Thank you for your interest in registering for Virya Foundation's Summer 2020 Dance Movement Therapy Camp! This 4-week workshop is free of cost and open to kids of all ages. Sessions start July 15th, 2020 and will be every Wednesday 6-7 pm until August 5th, 2020. Virya Foundation will adhere to the CDC's guidelines for Covid-19 to ensure that these classes are safely conducted. We will maintain social distance and wear masks at each session, and if there are more registrants than restrictions allow, we will split the camp into an A and B session.
I decided to organize this summer camp as a way to bring the kids of my community together during the unsettling period of Covid-19. Social unrest is filling our nation and there is no clarity about what the future holds. My goal through this workshop is to build resilience and confidence in kids so they can overcome challenges, whether it be linked to Covid-19 or anything else in their lives. Despite being physically apart, this workshop will allow us to be emotionally closer.
In this summer camp, students will learn the basics of Kathak, one of the eight major forms of Indian classical dance as a form of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT). DMT is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to integrate physical, emotional, and cognitive wellbeing. The fast footwork of Kathak helps to relieve tension, while the delicate hand movements helps to find beauty within ourselves. Dance lets us express ourselves beyond language and expression is one of the most important steps towards building resilience.
Most importantly, students will learn:
- Meditation & Mindfulness
- Emotional Balance through Navarasas (9 Emotions)
- Interpersonal skills
